We always try to change our appearance to look more beautiful and attractive. When we get tired of our hair color we come to the salon and ask the barber to highlight it. But just after a while we realize how much this can hurt our hair. And sometimes we realize this too late!
So what do we do? Do we have to stop experimenting with our hair and visiting a favorite salon? No, no, no… Of course, not! I recommend you (especially in summer) to use the homemade hair dryers to achieve a stylish highlighted look. I`m serious! Unfortunately, we often forget that we've got everything to highlight our hair in the kitchen.

Here I`d like to share 7 different highlighting methods that you can certainly try and not be afraid to damage your hair.
By the way, the homemade highlighting is much cheaper than you can do at the salon and it doesn't matter what hair color you have – dark, brown, red or blonde. Natural highlighting brings out its bright hues anyhow.
1. Honey

Honey contains glucose oxidase, which generates hydrogen peroxide – a sort of natural bleaching agent. The simplest way to lighten your hair is to take:
- A tablespoon of raw honey.
- A cup of room temperature water.
You have to blend honey and water in a bowl until you have a homogeneous mixture. Before applying this mixture to your hair you have to decide whether you want to highlight all your hair or just several strands and then rub the honey-water mask on the hair that you`d like to be lightened. If you want to make a few changes let this mixture sit in your hair for 30 to 60 minutes (for example, if your aim is chocolate brown with honey highlights). But if you want to get more impressive results leave this mask overnight and then wash the honey out. Don't forget repeat this process two or three times a week to keep the effect.
You also can add two cups of distilled vinegar and a tablespoon of virgin olive vinegar for extra highlighting.
2. Lemon Juice

Lemon is the best known natural hair highlighters or rather lemon juice. It's the oldest and easiest way to lighten the hair, besides it really works perfectly. To make a lemony highlighter you need:
- 2/3 cup of fresh lemon juice
- 1/3 cup of water
(If you have long hair and need more mixture remember that you should take two parts of lemon juice and just one part of water).
Mix together necessarily fresh lemon juice and water in a spray bottle and shake it properly. Spray your hair with this lemon mixture and with the help of your fingers comb your hair into strands. For great result leave the mixture on your hair for two hours, but 30 minutes of that time you should spend in the sun. Be careful and make sure not to get this lemon mixture on your skin before going into the sunlight as it can cause blistering. Don't forget that lemon juice can dry your hair that`s why condition if before and after the highlighting.
3. Henna Powder

Henna Powder is a perfect lightening agent. But before choosing this way to highlight your hair be sure that it's the right option for you. Remember that henna turns hair reddish brown and if you`ve got naturally light hair color henna powder can do it vice versa darker with a touch of red. But if your hair is naturally very dark or dark brown, of course, such mask makes it lighter and leave reddish highlights. For henna lightening mask you'll need:
- 3 tablespoons of henna powder
- ½ cup of boiling water
Mix henna powder with boiling water to get a thick paste and leave it for 12 hours or overnight in the cold place. Before covering your hair with this henna mask spread cream on your hairline and neck (as it would be difficult to wash the henna from the skin and don't forget to use gloves). When you apply the highlighter to your hair wait for 2-3 hours and wash out it well styling your hair as normal.
4. Herbal Tea

Using herbal tea you can easily boost your natural highlights. Don't forget that chamomile tea fits blonde hair and black tea is a great highlighter for brown and black hair. To use tea, take:
- 3-4 tea bags of tea
- Water
There is nothing easier for you that to boil water and brew really strong tea (steep the tea bags no less than 10 minutes). Let it cool. Now you can lean over the sink and pour the tea over your head if you want to lighten your hair all over or apply the tea to individual strands to lighten only them. Go out and allow the tea to dry in your hair (you have to wait for about 30 minutes while the sun reacts with the tea). Then wash, condition your hair and enjoy your new hair color.
5. Cinnamon

A nice way to change your hair color at home is to use the cinnamon mask. By the way, cinnamon contains antioxidants and natural sunscreen that`s why such mask not only help you highlight the hair, but also will protect your hair from destroying rays of the sun. All you need is to take:
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon powder
- Half a cup of conditioner
Add cinnamon powder to your normal conditioner and mix these ingredients to get a thick workable paste. Your hair should be wet. Cover the hair from top to bottom with this paste and leave it on for about 3-4 hours or even overnight to strengthen the effect. Don't forget to use a shower cap to hold your hair in place. No later than in the next morning wash it out thoroughly and style your hair as you usually would.
6. Baking Soda

Another old but still actual way of lightening is baking soda. You need:
- ½ cup of baking soda
- Warm water
.Just bring baking soda and add enough warm water to get a medium paste (if it's too thin you can't cover your hair well and if it's too thick it`ll dry out very fast). Apply this baking soda mask and wait for about 15-20 minutes. Then see what your hair looks like and if you enjoy wash it out if you want lighter color wait a little longer.
7. Rhubarb

Rhubarb also helps you to lighten the hair. Try a rhubarb hair mask and enjoy your refreshing style without chemical impact on your hair. Take:
- ¼ cup of chopped rhubarb
- 2 cups of water
Add chopped rhubarb into the water and boil this mixture. Then squeeze the juice. Allow it to cool. Cover your hair with this mask and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Wash out well and don't overdo it as rhubarb has pectic and if the mask leaves on your hair too long it`ll get sticky.
Conclusion
I have to warn you that the results from these homemade masks can vary as everyone`s hair is different, that`s why it`ll lose or absorb color at various rates. Be attentive and follow the process of lightening all the time. Maybe you won't be satisfied on the first try, but it`s okay. Unlike the chemical highlighting at the salon, such natural one you can make almost every day without any harmful effect on your hair. So try until you`ll get the desired color.
